New titles were up 9% for August over July, but were down 4.9% from August of last year. The year-over-year decline is not a huge surprise with Hurricane Harvey hitting on the 25th of the month and August 2016 being a very good month. The preliminary data from September gives us an initial insight into retail sales after the hurricane and while we’ll know more specifics on the impacted counties next month, the state as a whole is tracking 23% up over September of 2016.
Switching back to August and the top five counties for new installations, Harris was down 7% from last month, but remained number one for the month. Travis County (35.5%) had its second straight month of over 30% gains while Liberty and Bexar had the same amount of new installs this month as last month. The final spot in the top five went to Ector County which was up 38.1% over July. Montgomery County which had the second most installs in July, moved down to the sixth position with a 46.9% decline in August.
